Maintaining Health this Holiday Season
by Claire Domian, RD, LD
Just when the Halloween candy finally begins to run out, we quickly find ourselves in the middle of the holiday season. This joyous time spent with family and friends is full of parties, get-togethers, and special meals that are meant to create wonderful memories and spread good tidings. Rather than getting caught up in the guilt and negativity that can sometimes come with the holiday season, keep in mind these simple tips to continue health throughout the season and all year long – without guilt and without falling prey to the “New Year Resolution” dieting.
• Veggies First: The USDA MyPlate recommends filling half of your plate with fruits and vegetables. When going through a buffet line, start with salads and vegetable dishes. Try to add color and variety – dark green, orange/red, and beans and peas – these veggies are full of health-boosting nutrients!
• Get a good night sleep: holiday parties and fun-filled events can sometimes keep us out late, but it is sometimes worth the sleepiness to create fun memories and experiences. However, it can be difficult to “bounce-back” from these nights. When you can, try to get 7-8 hours of sleep most nights.
• Be gentile with yourself: if you really want a second slice of pie – go ahead and enjoy every bite of it! Remind yourself, especially around the holiday season, that one meal (or day!) of eating will not “wreck” your diet or your health. Every bite you take will be digested and you will be hungry again. Listen to your body – when you feel hungry find a snack, if you feel full stop eating.
Healthy habits don’t start on January 1st – but need to be practiced every day, all year long in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.
