FLOWER POWER: No, it’s not the ‘60s, but Flower Power is still alive — at least it is at Tower Grove Park. The park is planning a Flower Power Luncheon on May 7 beginning at 11 a.m. with refreshments around the newly renovated lily ponds and lunch at noon inside the Palm House and beneath a tent next to the ponds.
The lunch is intended to become an annual affair and is designed as a fundraising tool for the Flower Power group, which is using contributions to upgrade flower beds and plantings across the 289-acre Victorian walking park. Park director John Karel says the new flowers and plants will add diversity to what’s already there, and extend the bloom season for park visitors who want to “linger longer on their rambles.”
KMOX-AM radio’s Debbie Monterrey will emcee the lunch. Featured speaker will be Cheree Berry, founder of Cheree Berry Paper. Berry uses flowers and floral designs extensively in her work. She was an associate art director for Kate Spade stationery in New York City before moving back to St. Louis.
Also at the luncheon, the first James Gurney Award for park advocacy will be handed out. The award will be given annually at future Flower Power luncheons. Gurney was the park’s first superintendent.
Butler’s Pantry is honored to cater this event at the Piper Palm House. Ticket info: 314-771-4465.
